We were delighted to bring together this webinar with GAR in August, ‘Modernise your disputes practice: Building connected teams’. The panel was made up Lucy Greenwood, International Arbitrator, Guy Pendell, Partner at CMS, Steve Fleming, Chief Strategy Officer at Opus 2 and the discussion was moderated by GAR’s Cosmo Sanderson.
Each panellist contributed from their unique perspective, which resulted in an engaging and insightful webinar session. Among the topics discussed, a key theme focused on how legal teams could continue to work effectively in a distributed setup with virtual interactions on the rise due to the current global pandemic.
The panel discussed specific technology and working practices they have adopted that have helped them overcome specific remote-working challenges, as well as conducting hearings virtually. Interactive audience poll results suggested there was a preference for continued remote or flexible working practices post-pandemic which were very much in line with the panel’s predictions that COVID-19 may have a lasting long-term effects on working practices in the legal profession. Steve Fleming also provided fascinating insight into future technology developments which will further support remote working and legal proceedings.
Another key topic of the webinar, which was echoed by the questions received from the audience, was the effects of remote working on trainees and less-senior lawyers. There were concerns that the lack of face to face interaction and shadowing could be detrimental to their professional development. Guy Pendell and Lucy Greenwood both provided really insightful ideas and advice for tackling this current challenge, which was another valuable takeaway from the webinar.
